Nicky Ginsberg formerly of NG Art Gallery warmly welcomes Fiona White’s quirky characters and paradoxical, bubblegum worlds to Kensington Contemporary.
‘Juxtapose’ invites you to passage through the mesmerizing, eclectic façade of textured paint and exuberant colours, and to decipher White’s witty critique of the human condition contorted and confined within the synthetic suburban realm.
Sydney-based and self-taught artist, Fiona White, has drawn international appraisal for her distinct, charismatic figures and charming, whimsical narratives. Her layered multi-media practice and mouth-watering colour palette is instantly recognizable, as a vibrant energy ricochets between compressed charcoal and gelatinous paint.
In 2015 alone, White was a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award, the London Creative Competition, the Mosman Art Prize, the Gold Coast Art Prize, and her work was exhibited at Artexpo New York, and Miami Red Dot Art Fair. White has also been represented in the Korean International Art Fair, London Olympics Art Show and BHP Billiton Collection, as well as being the recipient of the 2010 Blake Human Justice Prize. Fiona White is included in private collections in USA, Italy, UK and Hong Kong.
‘Juxtapose’ is a provocative social commentary disguised by the artist’s characteristic humour and absurdity. White blurs the line between fact and fiction, reality and imagination. The multiplicity of emotion captured in the charcoal faces is counteracted by the playful, illustrative backgrounds. ‘Juxtapose’ welcomes you like a child to a lolly shop, drawn by the temptation of vivid colours, layered paint like panels of gelato, the cheeky and enigmatic expressions of White’s cohorts, and the tantalizing scent of a story.
