Statement

Nicky Ginsberg President of the Chippendale Creative Precinct warmly welcomes the fresh and alluring works of Vanessa Stockard to Kensington Contemporary. ‘Spring’ celebrates the subtleties of Stockard’s favourite season by capturing each flourish and bloom forever in paint before they inevitably shrink back into the dust.

‘Spring’ showcases Stockard’s latest paintings that invite us to revel in the wonderful intricacies of the season, and highlight its delicate and graceful nature. Each painting perfectly encapsulates her subtle impression of Spring, whilst emitting a freshness to still life painting. The colour palette which sweeps across ‘Spring’ gives indication to the multisensory nature of the season; crisp light blues are reminiscent of fresh air and the gentle pastel tones give warmth and fragrance to Stockard’s fond memories. The ornamental plums, apricots and cherries that feature in her works perfectly describe her appreciation for new life.

Much like gardening, Stockard works hard to tend to her palette, carefully planting colour onto the canvas before allowing each element to come together in an alluring symphony of colours and textures. She paints swiftly and with great emotion; the oil paint applied in broad strokes before intricate details are added.

The sensitive line work prevalent in each piece alludes to the complementary energies contained within the season of spring, creating a blissful balance between light and colour. Stockard comments “With each new work created, the mysteries of capturing light, tone and texture within each composition evolve.”

Vanessa Stockard lives in the Southern Highlands, where the natural landscape is both marvelous and immersive. She celebrates its beauty by capturing her experiences of her own garden and shares each moment of fascination and joy in her work. Stockard is a Sydney based artist and has practiced the art of painting for over 20 years. She has studied Art History at the University of Sydney and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney. Her work has featured in a number of prestigious exhibitions both locally and internationally.

Here amongst the works of Vanessa Stockard, all the world’s a stage, where the season of spring is given its rightful lead role, showcasing its true beauty and allure.
