RANDOM RANDOM
Lorna Grear

Does randomness exist? Is being random a philosophical conundrum, a playful idea based on chance or a buzz word used by Gen Z? For Lorna Grear randomness means abandoning her carefully constructed geometric formulas to present her new body of work – pop up painterly events. Some works rest heavily on pseudo Expressionism whilst others are moments of casual emotional responses. Overall the result is an uncanny body of sculptural and painterly entities that celebrate the process of lateral thinking.

Lorna Grear is a Sydney based artist who uses paintings, collages and sculptural relief works to emphasise ideas of process, order and the painterly sensation.

Lorna has held numerous solo exhibitions including at the infamous Tailor Room Gallery, Sydney in 1998 – 2003 and at Peloton Gallery in 2005, 2009 and 2011. Other galleries where her work has been shown include, Imperial Slacks, Herringbone, SNO, Phatspace, Zitlip, Sheffer, UTS Gallery and Firstdraft. Lorna’s work has been selected for the Portia Geach Memorial Prize, The Fisher’s Ghost Open Award, Mosman Art Prize and the Liverpool Art Prize.

In her independent curatorial practice Lorna co- curated ‘Here is a Fresh Egg’, as part of a collective in Zitlip Gallery, 1994 and curated Homefront at Sheffer Gallery, Sydney in 2010 and The Baker’s Dozen at UTS Gallery, Sydney in 2012. Prior to this her time was spent in London, 1987- 1993, initiating community arts groups, including Scarecrow Tiggy- an artist run co-operative in Camberwell. She is a graduate of both Sydney College of the Arts (BVA, Honours, and MVA) and The National Art School, Sydney (Dip Fine Arts). Lorna currently teaches art history and painting at South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE

From Beneath the Velvet Curtain
Dean Tirkot

Dean Tirkot has developed the first installation of a new body of work that focuses on the seemingly strange, but beautiful phenomenon of gender-ambiguous characters created by some of the theatrical crafts more evoking queer performance artists, including Glitta Supernova, Betty Grumble, Aaron Manhattan, MC Gaff E and Dallas Dellaforce.

Dean’s large-scale photographic portraits reveal a glimpse of the real person behind the manifested façade; the person the audience never gets to see, to give an unusual insight into the performer’s conscious transformation.

While the stage performance is always hidden by movement – smoke and mirrors – this exhibition will lift a corner of the velvet curtain, and reveal some of the truth beneath the illusion, and in that mix of fact and fiction deliver an insight into an ever stranger thing: the world of metamorphosis.

Beside each photograph, to augment that strange sense of dislocation from reality, will be a short piece by writer Wil Gritten. His mission is to catch the elusive essence of that transmutation and to amplify it, to grasp and maintain the momentary swirling eddy of change and to describe its surreal purity: the mask half on, before the transformation is complete.

Dean Tirkot is a Sydney-based photographic portrait artist who is currently using a large format 8×10” Deardoff field camera to capture unprecedented sharpness and clarity. The intention of this slow and cumbersome process is to achieve an honest and un-manipulated aesthetic that reveals beauty in the realism of his subjects, to contrast the mainstream conformities of superficial idealism and perceived, aspirational beauty.

Dean is currently studying at the Sydney College of the Arts where he is completing his MSA. In 2011 he was awarded the Kings Cross portrait prize, and his work has been a finalist in the Doug Moran prize 2011, 2009 and in 2007, when he received the highly commended award. Simultaneously he has been a finalist in 2011 and 2009 in Art & About’s Sydney Life exhibition. Since 1997 Dean’s work has appeared in numerous group shows, as well as commercial editorial and advertising mediums domestic and worldwide.

(Wil Gritten is a Welsh author living in Bondi, and the author of Letting Go, The Long Dark and What Go Around Come Around, Kid.)

Artist Bryden Williams heads to China to partake in the first arts residency of the $100,000 10 year arts initiative

Sydney, 30 April 2013 – NSW based artist, Bryden Williams, 23, has been awarded the inaugural Chippendale New World Art Prize, the first year of a 10-year $100,000 arts initiative created by the Chippendale Creative Precinct’s (CCP). This July, Bryden will take his past meets future alterations of the material and the familiar to Beijing, to partake in a $10,000 art residency at the Red Gate Residency in Beijing, China for 3 months with all expenses paid.

The winning work entitled ‘Techno Fire’ (2013), integrates various multimedia sculptures and moving image works to create a simulated luminescent experience that explores the roles of both natural and artificial light in a technologically saturated environment. It explores the relationship between our primal roots and our modern constructed reality by encapsulating the prize’s 2013 theme of ‘Revitalisation’ and ‘Creating a New World’ through the investigation of primal infatuations and our dependence on fire and means of progress.

Winning artist, Bryden Williams who lives in Glebe invites his audience to reflect on our evolution towards the technologically facilitated world we live in today.

“To cook, to heat, to defend, to grow and to destroy. Fire is responsible for our current technological era.”

CCP Founder and Director of NG Art Gallery Nicky Ginsberg said that the judging panel unanimously chose ‘Techno Fire’ as the overall winner for its ingenuity in combining the themes of the Chippendale New World Art Prize and with carefully considered objects in the creation of his installation. Although Bryden’s work clearly stood out, the judging panel was overwhelmed by high calibre of deeply considered work that was entered into the Prize.

‘It was fantastic to see the number of emerging artists that entered the Prize and we were very impressed with the unique cross section of thought provoking works. The CCP is very excited about the inaugural prize and look forward to watching the initiative evolve over the coming years.”

‘We are delighted to be able to offer the very talented Bryden Williams this life-changing opportunity to further her practice and gain international recognition in a thriving arts hub such as Beijing, China. The arts residency at Red Gate Residency will allow him to soak up all of the cultural experiences and inspiration that Beijing has to offer, as well as joining an international community of other artists.” Ms Ginsberg said.

“The Chippendale Creative Precinct is incredibly grateful to the benefactor of the prize, Dr. Stanley Quek, Chairman of Frasers Property Australia and CEO of Greencliff Realty for making this incredible prize a reality.”

As a passionate patron of the arts, Dr. Quek has entrusted the Chippendale Creative Precinct to foster the next generation of emerging artists through this exciting 10 year arts initiative.

The acclaimed judging panel, which included, Dean of Sydney College of the Arts, Professor Colin Rhodes; Head of Design at UTS, Dr. Lawrence Wallen, and Director and Curator of NG Art Gallery and Beams Festival Director, Nicky Ginsberg, also chose 40 finalists’ work to showcase.

The winner and 40 other finalists will be exhibited as part of the Chippendale New World art Prize: Exhibition of finalist’s at NG Art Gallery and three other Chippendale gallery spaces (x88 Gallery, NG Art Pop-Up Gallery and Central Park Display Pavilion) from Wednesday 1 May 2013.

Visitors are encouraged to pick up an exhibition map at any one of the gallery locations and follow the ‘Chippendale art trail’ to visit all four galleries, taking in all of the finalists work.

Other notable works entered will be exhibited at the 2013 Beams Arts Festival that celebrates Chippendale as a cultural arts precinct of Sydney.

Special Moves
Artists Arryn Snowball, Christian Flynn, Leah Emery, Julie Fragar, Miles Hall and Jonathan McBurnie curator

Special Moves features new work by Julie Fragar, Christian Flynn, Leah Emery, Miles Hall, Arryn Snowball and Jonathan McBurnie. The exhibition explores the role of broader drawing as a conversation with- or resistance to- the digital zeitgeist. Co-ordinated by McBurnie, the exhibition is arranged as a kind of exegesis- over the last decade, the artists have had direct effects on each other’s practice, and this is reflected within the relationships between the work as well as the artists themselves.

Jonathan McBurnie is a PhD candidate at the Sydney College of the Arts, with a special interest in contemporary drawing. McBurnie has exhibited extensively in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in solo and group exhibitions. McBurnie considers himself the runt of the Special Moves litter, following the trailblazing national (and international) exhibition history of Fragar, Flynn, Emery, Hall and Snowball. McBurnie is also working on a graphic novel, an opera and a screenplay, and is an editor and contributor to http://revolt.net.au/.
