PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
CHIPPENDALE CREATIVE PRECINCT

What an exciting year 2013 is turning out to be! The Chippendale Creative Precinct (CCP) has grown to over 90 members, made up of local businesses and creative individuals in and around the Chippendale area.

The City Of Sydney continues to recognize the CCP’s efforts in developing the Chippendale area into a dynamic creative hub by approving a Village Partnership Grant for 2013/14 of $80,000, greatly helping the CCP cause.

Frasers Property Australia and Sekisui House are the CCP’s major sponsors, providing us with great support and many opportunities to establish Chippendale as Sydney’s premier arts destination.

With the help of CCP members and sponsors, we have been able to carry out some wonderful initiatives. We held the Chippendale New World Art Prize in April this year across 4 locations in Chippendale. The $100,000 prize was generously donated in a philanthropic gesture by Dr Stanley Quek, Chairman of Frasers Property  Australia. The winning artist Bryden Williams is off to China for a three-month residency at Redgate in Beijng.

Other initiatives that are in the process of implementation are a Discounted Services Initiative available to all CCP members, and an Internship Program with Notre Dame University and the University of Technology.

Don’t forget the second addition of the Gallery Guide to Chippendale & Surrounds is available to be stocked in your business foyer, reception, gallery or eatery. They can now be found in some of the major hotels across Sydney.

Our upcoming networking evening is to be held at UberConsults on Thursday 8th August, 6-8pm. Delicious nibbles will be offered by Zigi's Wine & Cheese Bar. More on this soon but pop the date into your diary NOW!

For further information on the initiatives, please contact:

To ensure another world-class event, we would appreciate any support you may be able to provide. Harrington Street Gallery

HARRINGTON STREET GALLERY
40TH ANNIVERSARY

In 2013 Harrington Street Gallery is celebrating its 40th Anniversary, making it Sydney's longest running artists' co-operative gallery. Initially in Harrington Street, The Rocks, the gallery moved to Chippendale in 1986. Its founder, John Ogburn, saw the need for a gallery with its sole criterion being artistic quality and where artists would be free to exhibit free of commercial constraints. Some of the artists exhibiting this year have been showing since the gallery's inception in 1973. Letters of congratulation on the anniversary have been received from the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore and the NSW Minister for the Arts, Hon. George Souris.

The gallery is at 17 Meagher St Chippendale, and gallery hours are 10am to 4pm every day except Monday.

NG Art Gallery - Eric Lobbecke

NG ART GALLERY
CURRENT EXHIBITION: ERIC LOBBECKE

Don't miss award winning political cartoonist and artist Eric Lobbecke’s current exhibition, Random Thoughts now showing at NG Art Gallery until Saturday 20th July.

Random Thoughts is a visual unraveling of the artist’s inner subconscious. Laid bare on his canvases in vermillion red and ultramarine blue, the dramatic images pose more questions than answers.

Although a seemingly random exploration of process, Lobbecke has noticed motifs organically manifesting themselves throughout his compositions, in his words he has discovered his "own iconography." The incorporation of a fish symbolises fear, the repetition of hands denotes opportunity, the takeaway coffee cup a reference to contemporary culture, each motif acting as a visual clue for Lobbecke’s own mind.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION: UTS FACULTY OF DESIGN

UTS Faculty of Design Academics team up for the 2nd of their 8 exhibitions to be held at NG Art Pop-Up Gallery on Broadway with Words From the First Walk, an exhibition of works on paper by Zoë Sadokierski, photographs by Jacqueline Lorber-Kasunic, and writing by Tom Lee to be opened by Astrid Lorange poet, teacher, and researcher on Thursday 11 July from 6 - 8pm.

The exhibition tells the story of a walk, in three different ways. The poet retraces past memories. The illustrator obsesses with the minutiae of shape and pattern. The photographer maps movement in the landscape brought about by farming practices.

NG Art Pop Up Gallery will be open Tuesday to Saturday 12-4pm for the duration of the exhibition. The UTS:DESIGN exhibitions are running for three weeks per exhibition up until December 2013.

White Rabbit Gallery - Smash Palace

WHITE RABBIT GALLERY
CURRENT EXHIBITION: SMASH PALACE

There is still time to see Smash Palace at White Rabbit Gallery before the next install!

In the metastasising mega-cities where more than half of China's people live, change is the only constant. As shabby residential districts are replaced by gleaming skyscrapers, people's anxiety is rising as fast as their expectations. As new possibilities emerge, old certainties are falling apart.

Smash Palace surveys the reactions of China's best contemporary artists to the shocks of the new century. Some question the solidity of the status quo; others look beneath the surface and find monsters lurking. Some find reality so absurd that fantasy or mockery seems the only proper response; still others reach for anchors in the same Olds that the Maoists were so determined to erase. Smash Palace runs until Sunday 4th August 2013.

CHIPPENDALE CREATIVE BUSINESSES

Central Park

FRASERS PROPERTY AUSTRALIA
OPENING OF THE PARK WALKWAY

From 11am on Saturday 27 July you'll be able to walk from O'Connor Street straight through the heart of Central Park to Broadway. It's only 300 metres or so, but opening up this pedestrian promenade and cycleway - which runs alongside the heritage Brewery Yard building and through Chippendale Green - will make a world of difference to residents and business in Chippendale. The old CUB site has been closed to the public for over 150 years, so this is a major milestone in the development of Central Park and a leap forward in the accessibility of Chippendale.

Local residents and workers are invited to gather just off Broadway (outside the Central Park Display Pavilion) at 11am on Saturday 27 July to join the Lord Mayor Clover Moore as she cuts a ribbon and leads the throng on the very first North/South stroll, ending in Chippendale Green for a coffee and muffin with Sydney Cycleway's pop-up bike repair shop on hand.

HACKETT FILMS
NEW WORK FOR THE ABC

Hackett Films continues to shine with new and inspiring work. This time they have the treasures in the ABC archive to play with. Jennifer Collins at the ABC asked them to create a broadcast package for a new comedy quiz show 'Tractor Monkeys'. Hosted by Merrick Watts, the titles reflect the fast paced, high energy feel of the questions and games that are centred around the more disturbing and bizarre pieces of archive footage the ABC can dig up. Hence 'Tractor Monkeys'... we'll leave the rest up to your imagination.

With a core team of four people, the UK office will hit the ground running with a host of established relationships and one of IA's foundation clients Audio Network.

CHIPPENDALE IN THE NEWS

Chippendale

SYDNEY'S SECRET SPOTS
CHECK OUT CHIPPENDALE

"....Those craving a creative refuge should head to Chippendale. This is where the art pack gravitate. A network of bright and experimental galleries have sprouted here showcasing a variety of artistic mediums so bountiful that some galleries can hardly contain them. In fact, sometimes the art spills into the streets taking in the form of sculpture and installations, murals and pop-up art spaces.

NG Art Gallery was one of the first galleries that opened in the area. Owner Nicky Ginsberg came to Chippendale almost seven years ago. The former art dealer had a vision to expand Sydney's thriving arts scene from the Eastern suburbs to the eclectic energies of the inner-city district. "Chippendale was a cultural desert. I came here with a goal to revitalise the area and make a difference to the community," says the passionate supporter of the arts. "I'd like to see Chippendale as the next Chelsea or Soho," for which she set up the Chippendale Creative Precinct working closely with Sydney City Council and collaborates with the galleries of Chippendale. She's also committed to promoting the works of new, mid-career and established artists.

McLemoi Gallery presents the compelling contemporary work of emerging and mid-career local and international artists. They feature work that is conceptually exciting and visually engaging.

White Rabbit Gallery is an art enclave that prevails contemporary Chinese collections of art. It's café has become a staple of the Chippendale community with tea and dumplings on the menu...."
