PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
CHIPPENDALE CREATIVE PRECINCT

As the season of balmy Sydney nights approaches, I want to reflect on the hot successes we have already had this year.

Many of you took part in the BEAMS Arts Festival and helped us once again ignite the streets with what can only be described as a dazzling achievement of the arts, technology and spirit. The thousands of enchanted, inspired attendees on the night indicate a growing audience to our streets and this pull-factor is exactly what we hope to achieve for Chippendale's creative businesses through initiatives like BEAMS.

From the generous grants and support from the City of Sydney, alongside our major sponsors Frasers Property and Sekisui House, we hold our vision clear in our sights and pursue it with the same energy as when we first came together in 2010.

International and domestic attention to Chippendale will be soaring as Qantas have selected Chippendale to be featured soon in their in-flight magazine. This coveted, prestigious exposure will undoubtedly place Chippendale as a jet-set destination. This exposure builds upon the earlier Indian airline JetWings' coverage in their in-flight magazine of Chippendale as the next gallery destination. Chippendale is really spreading its wings!

We are also pleased to announce that we are soon to be working on the third edition of our Gallery Guide to Chippendale & Surrounds. Copies of the current edition are available to tourists in major international hotels and tourist information booths across the city.

BEAMS Arts Festival 2013 - Photography by Graynoise

BEAMS 2013 FESTIVAL WRAP-UP!
WHAT A SUCCESS!!

What a year it has been! We are still coming down from the electrifying high of the BEAMS Arts Festival 2013. Eight of our Chippendale streets were transformed into an alfresco arts experience, drawing in an audience of approximately 10,000 to partake in the festivities.

Those who witnessed this spectacle were treated to a fantastic array of site-specific art installations, interactive media, and music and dance performances, not to mention the gourmet selection of food and drinks fuelling the energy on the night.

Post-festival, our BEAMS team debrief indicated what we already suspected - there was a resounding mood of elation and pride in our collective achievement for Chippendale, and we can't wait to start planning for BEAMS version 3.0 next year!

CHIPPENDALE ART GALLERIES

Natalya Hughes - Looking Cute 2013 (detail)

THE COMMERCIAL GALLERY
UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Natalya Hughes
Looking Twice

Opening Friday 18th October 6-8pm
Exhibition: 18th October - 9th November 2013

Natalya Hughes (b. 1977, Macksville) is a painter but in recent years has extended her practice to include wallpaper, carpet and fabric design, upholstery and animation. Her practice is embedded in the history of decoration across cultures and the literature and language of decadence. Hughes takes whatever appeals to her from these places and incorporates them within her pattern-saturated realm in a palette suggestive of the boudoir. Pop-cultural references also figure in her allegories as do synechdocal elements contributing towards abstracted portraiture.

Looking Twice, Hughes' first solo exhibition at The Commercial Gallery, Sydney, consists of large scale acrylic paintings on plywood.

The Dirt

KALEIDOSCOPE GALLERY
CURRENT EXHIBITION

Original art works by The Dirt & Bafcat
Young Blood

‘Kaleidoscope Gallery and adjoining laneway.

Exhibition until Sunday Oct 6th

The Dirt:
Often painting on a large scale his work revolves around a more realistic style with thought provoking concepts. The Dirt’s murals can be seen throughout Sydney and was recently involved in the City of Sydney’s 75 meter long mural along Foley Street in Darlinghurst.”

Bafcat:
His work is a psychotic mix of pop cultural references/hallucinations, thin black lines, vibrant colour, and adrenalin fuelled late nights. If you haven’t seen his work then you must be living under a rock.

Although both artists have been classically trained they approach their genre with varied and distinctive style.

Fernando do Campo

MCLEMOI GALLERY
EXHIBITIONS 24 OCTOBER - 16 NOVEMBER

PETER BURGESS "and ...some text works"
FERNANDO do CAMPO
Two clouds passing behind stars

MCLEMOI GALLERY is proud to present its very first all-Australian exhibition featuring two solo exhibitions by Peter Burgess and Fernando do Campo. These exciting exhibitions, "and …some text pieces" and Two clouds passing behind stars, will see the two artists display their unique bodies of work.

Peter Burgess is an established Sydney-based artist and is Co-Acting Subject Leader in Printmaking at the National Art School, Sydney. Burgess' exhibition, "and …some text pieces", represents the culmination of more than 2 decades of ongoing projects, in which the artist embarked on a witty investigation of words and their associations, methodically rearranging letters to create anagrams that play on the names of famous artists, celebrities and sayings. These playful rewordings are realised in a series of prints that poke fun at art world politics and blur the line between the artistic high and low brow.

Two clouds passing behind stars, by emerging Tasmanian artist Fernando do Campo, is a compilation of works completed in 2013 at a three-month studio residency at Schloss Laudon, Vienna, as well as a selection of paintings from the artist's previous bodies of work. do Campo's paintings explore the formal and decorative qualities of pictorial space through the manipulation of a set of repeated geometric shapes. Employing a set of rules and restrictions in order to formally define the parameters of his paintings, do Campo's works are striking in their formulism and visual championing of the decorative.

Mason Kimber - This One

MOP PROJECTS
UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

Exhibitions: 24th October - 10th November

Gallery 1
Amber Koroluk-Stephenson
Quixotic Habitation

In her exhibition Quixotic Habitation Amber Koroluk-Stephenson playfully explores notions of utopia, drawing from her immediate suburban surrounds to present a cross section of living ideals. The imagined environments depicted in the works allude to the popularised notion of the Australian 'suburban dream' realised through self-styled attempts at creating utopia…

Gallery 2
Mason Kimber
Screen Memory

Screen Memory is a new series of paintings that investigate the relationship between mediated images and architecturally remembered space. Each work is based upon fragments of digitally found screen images combined with painterly invention and abstraction. What remains are hybrid spaces that defy traditional perspective while at the same time appear to dissolve like the visual traces of a memory.

UTS

Lawrence Wallen

NG ART POP-UP GALLERY
UPCOMING EXHIBITION: UTS FACULTY OF DESIGN

Lawrence Wallen
Ascension

Exhibition: 24th October - 9th November 2013

The latest of a series of 8 exhibitions presented by UTS: Faculty of Design at NG Art Pop-Up Gallery.

Ascension by Head of UTS Faculty of Design Lawrence Wallenacts as a collection of influences on an unformed new series of work dealing with biodiversity, constructions of utopia, institutional collections and individual narratives engaged in the reconstruction of nature.

Ascension refers to the Ascension Island a remote and desolate point in the South Atlantic that in the mid nineteenth century was planted from the stock of the Kew Gardens in London resulting in the artificial creation of a tropical cloud forest.

The mixed media installation spatially explores the motivations, histories, narratives and found material of a project in formation.

White Rabbit Gallery - Serve the People

WHITE RABBIT GALLERY
CURRENT EXHIBITION: SERVE THE PEOPLE

SERVE THE PEOPLE

Exhibition: 30 August 2013 - 2 February 2014

A slogan of the 1966 - 76 Cultural Revolution, "Serve the People" meant serving the great cause of socialism. Artists were crucial to that effort, but they had to make the right kinds of art: Soviet-style socialist realism or ink painting on revolutionary themes. All other art forms, Western or Chinese, were banned, and those who dared to practise them were vilified as capitalist-roaders and traitors.

SERVE THE PEOPLE is curated by Edmund Capon, the longtime Director and Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, who has been involved with Chinese art both classical and contemporary for more than 40 years and made the first of his many visits to China in 1974, at the height of the Cultural Revolution.

AJ+C Major Student Housing Development

ALLEN JACK+COTTIER
COMPLETED PROJECTS

Allen Jack+Cottier has recently completed DA design for a new 20 storey, 635 bed student housing tower for Urbanest at the southern gateway to the new Sydney International Convention, Exhibition, and Entertainment Precinct (SICEEP) in Darling Harbour and Haymarket.

With Lend Lease, architects Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Denton Corker Marshall and Hassell, AJ+C was part of the successful Darling Harbour Live bid for the precinct in late 2012. This will involve renewal of the exhibition, convention and entertainment centres at Darling Harbour as well as construction of a new residential, commercial and cultural precinct in The Haymarket, where the Entertainment Centre and a car park currently stand.

Our role includes the design of two multi-storey buildings containing just over 1000 student accommodation beds. The first stage of this accommodation has just been submitted for State Significant DA, and is expected to open in early 2016.

BROADWAY CYCLE LINK

The City of Sydney’s 2km Broadway Cycle Link - which includes Chippendale Way through the middle of Central Park - has been approved. The Link is a key component of the City’s Cycling Strategy and Action Plan, which aims to make bike travel as popular as walking and public transport.

This new shortcut makes it possible for Chippendale’s residents to walk and cycle from home to the city or Central without having to loop around ‘the old CUB site’, which has been closed to the public since shortly after brewing began on the site in 1835.

Accessibility and permeability - for pedestrians and cyclists - is a key feature of the masterplan for Central Park.

CJZ
Gruen Nation 2013

It's not often our work is affected by a political ousting but the news bought about a collective "what the hell are we going to do now?".

The stop-motion Gruen Nation titles for 2013 where in the bag when we had to work out how we could turn Julia into Kevin. Working with Jon Casimir at CJZ, we came up with a plan; part of which turned Julia Bishop into Peter Garret so we could give the flick to three pollies in the first three seconds of the titles.

From political ads on telegraph poles through to the latest media channels, they all feature in this sequence, rendered in a stylised Aussie landscape made mostly from paper, with a few scale models as well. Look out for the classic Holden HX ute!

Bauer Media Group
Health and Wellbeing 2013

Bauer Media wanted to create a bright, fresh new look for this year's Health and Wellbeing Festival. Instead of going with the usual live action route, we illustrated and animated a male and female character with a rich colour palette to promote the fun and active vibe of the festival. The campaign included print ads, promotional bags and an animated TVC.
