Chippendale Creative Precinct

WELCOME TO 2016, CHIPPENDALE!

The Chippendale Creative Precinct warmly welcomes you to 2016, a new year - set to be our most daring yet.

In the customary practice of turning over a new leaf, we’ll begin as such: new galleries, new exhibitions, new members, new collaborations and new initiatives alongside our continuing projects. This year, the theme of Spirit dominates our events, with the Chippendale New World Art Prize to be held Thursday 2 June and BEAMS Arts Festival on Saturday 17 September. While our Explore Chippendale Gallery Walking Tours continue on the 1st Saturday of every month, they’ll be joined by Food Safaris and Historical Walking Tours, all engaging exclusive commentary from local creatives on this precinct’s virtues.

Chippendale, with all its quirks, imperfections and endearing community, remains the inspiration for all CCP ambitions: to pinpoint the creative heart of Sydney on the world map of lifestyle destinations. We maintain strong relationships with City of Sydney, Destination NSW and Tourism Australia, working to build Chippendale as an arts, food and lifestyle mecca that gains greater media recognition by the day.

GALLERY OPENING NIGHT

Join us at Kensington Contemporary from 6-8PM on Thursday 14 January, as we open the first exhibitions of the year! There’ll be good wines and good times on this balmy summer night.

BARRY WHITE

DRAWN TO CHIPPENDALE

KENSINGTON CONTEMPORARY 1

OPENING THURSDAY 14 JANUARY 6PM

Drawn to Chippendale is Barry White’s navigation of Chippendale and its surrounds, from the commercial arteries to the back streets. In a series of pen and watercolour works, White guides us through his old haunts in whimsical vignettes that capture what so largely defines the identity of Sydney’s inner west: its architecture.

KATE DAMBACH

PAUSES

KENSINGTON CONTEMPORARY 2

OPENING THURSDAY 14 JANUARY 6PM

Pauses presents the opportunity to view the world in slow motion. Kate Dambach explores the idea of isolated transitional spaces and how they hold the essence of experience within this in-between – like the pause at the end of a breath. Dambach brings new life to an act as commonplace as breathing, projecting a magic onto its precious simplicity and a power onto its absolute command.

CHINESE NEW YEAR ON KENSINGTON STREET

4 - 8PM, SATURDAY 6 FEBRUARY

In the Year of the Monkey, Kensington Street’s heritage buildings open their doors to a new year of luck, prosperity and union. On Saturday 6 February a parade of live performances thunders across the cobblestones in our celebration of Chinese New Year.

From 4 - 8PM Saturday 6 February, behold lion dancers and fortune telling from Mrs Tao, who specialises in numerology and psychic readings! There’ll be artists’ workshops delving into shadow puppetry, Korean paper burning and origami folding, and live demonstrations from calligraphy masters along the length of Kensington Street.

The chefs behind restaurants such as Mekong, Bistrot Gavroche, KY-OTO and KOI Dessert Bar will deliver food demonstrations and offer their own food stalls for all indulge in. Satisfy yourself at the Lunar Feasts, and enjoy traditional children’s dance and music from across East Asia - from Mongolia, the Dai nationality, and across the Chinese provinces.

To name just a few of the charms that await us!

This will be Kensington Street’s official launch as Sydney’s newest lifestyle destination!

To end with a bang, join us at lunch and dinner on Monday 8 February for lion dancing in Spice Alley, where oranges will be hung to feed the lions in the tradition of Chinese New Year.

In a whirlwind of paper lanterns and abundant cheer, the only way to start 2016 properly is with a street party. Come out and dine on this cultural feast with us - the whole family will be there.
