BEAMS 2015 | OH, WHAT A NIGHT!

For the fourth fabulous time, BEAMS has come and gone in the flash of an eye. This year’s celebration was no mere twinkle in the night; BEAMS 2015 was a fully-fledged explosion, an assembly of Sydney’s creative wonders, each responding to the theme of Phenomena.

And boy did they produce just that: a phenomenal street party of 22,000 guests converged deep in the heart of one of Sydney’s oldest, richest, most beloved precincts. Not only were we treated to an astounding amalgam of dance, music, art, light, food, drink, and even fire, BEAMS 2015 also witnessed the rebirth of Kensington Street, its regeneration truly a phenomenon in itself.

What once was known as the Chippendale Creative Precinct has now been rebranded as Destination Chippendale, but our dream still remains - to transform one of Sydney’s best-kept secrets into our very own answer to NYC’s Chelsea. A dream very much attainable after the success of this spectacular event.

After naming inner city Chippendale one of Sydney’s hotspots for 2015, tourism body Destination NSW engaged ABC International to document BEAMS for the program Window on Australia, to be aired in November to over 55 million people across Indonesia. Chippendale continues to find its place in the international limelight, the product of an exciting urban renaissance.

MARIOLA SMARZAK

NEW WORKS

KENSINGTON CONTEMPORARY 1

Mariola Smarzak

Mariola Smarzak is emerging as one of Australia’s finest contemporary artists. Within her repertoire, she has been a multiple time finalist in numerous prizes and most recently in the 2014 Archibald Prize. Smarzak paints with a distinct poetic quality, the abstract landscapes of New Works evoking a mood rather than places or objects. She has described her approach as intuitive rather than literal which, combined with a desire to simplify elements, results in dreamy vistas of a spiritual nature.

OCHRE LAWSON

REMNANTS

KENSINGTON CONTEMPORARY 2

Ochre Lawson - Goanna in the Grass

Ochre Lawson’s practice was cultivated within the unruly bushlands of Sydney suburbia. Her painting oeuvre navigates sequestered wilderness; of Angophoras, rugged rock formations and mangrove swamps, where light filters through the canopy to dapple tributary waters. Lawson’s thickly layered application of an earthy palette captures a mystical energy that pulses through these undisturbed reserves. They are the untamed Remnants of primal evolution.

BERIC AND JULIAN HENDERSON

COSMOGRAPHICA

CARLTON PROJECT SPACE

Beric Henderson - Symmetry of Nature

Channelling the medieval practice of charting the heavens, Beric and Julian Henderson bring Cosmographica to Carlton Project Space, where paintings, illustrations and light box installations map out the infinite cosmos. This collaborative effort between father and son sheds light on scientific foundations of the universe and the unfathomable darkness that may never be charted. With Beric’s ongoing investigation into science and philosophy and Julian’s love of visual pattern, audiences are led to consider our spiritual presence amidst the stars, and wonder at how miniscule we human beings truly are.

All exhibitions conclude on Saturday 14 November.
