WHAT'S ON THE CHIPPENDALE CREATIVE PRECINCT CALENDAR?

THE BEAMS ARTS FESTIVAL in 4 WEEKS!!

We hope you have penciled in Saturday 19th of September in your calendar, because the BEAMS Arts Festival begins its festivities from 5 to 10PM in Chippendale.

PHENOMENA sets the theme for this year's vibrant and eclectic program, reflecting the phenomena of Chippendale itself from industrial beginnings to a contemporary scene, re-imagining the possibilities of the city through collaborative imagination.

This year the footprint of BEAMS will be the largest to date with the event extending further into Chippendale Green public park, located within the Central Park development - set to attract a record number of visitors.

Festival Director and former NG Art Gallery owner, Nicky Ginsberg said BEAMS is a colourful and engaging spectacle which has become one of the most highly anticipated events on Sydney's arts and cultural calendar since its inception in 2012.

"This year BEAMS will be bigger and better than ever - featuring art, sound and light installations, video and animation, live dance, theatre and art performances, as well as food stalls showcasing Chippendale's finest eateries.

In collaboration with King Sound Studios and the Australian Institute of Music, Australia's best and brightest talent in live music will also feature in this year's stellar line-up" said Ms Ginsberg.

BEAMS is proudly hosted by the Chippendale Creative Precinct and this year is pleased to announce major sponsors including Frasers Property Australia, Sekisui House Australia and the City of Sydney.

CREATIVE FOCUS

With only 4 more weeks until Chippendale's favourite block party, we thought we would share some creatives to look out for at this year's BEAMS Arts Festival!

Julia Featherstone

The interactive work "Moonlight Sonata" by experimental media artist Julia Featherstone explores the phenomenon of the full moon and its emotional impact on humans. Inspired by the ephemeral Min Min lights that appear in the Australian outback, Featherstone encourages the BEAMS Arts Festival audiences to create shadows and shapes using their bodies, adding a surreal appeal to a moonlit desert landscape.

Flatline

Flatline is an interdisciplinary collective founded by visual artist Todd Fuller and dancer/choreographer Carl Sciberras. Their work for BEAMS 2015, "Sketchfield Series", is a three hour performance of phenomena merging dance and visual art into a succession of dynamic live animations. As the dancers move through the space their motions are mapped and drawn, projecting themselves across the surrounding walls.

Jia Guo

Sydney-based illustrator, artist, maker and designer Jia Guo brings her mesmerising video and interactive work "Infinity" to this year's BEAMS. This surreal, immersive video installation explores the trials and wonders of her own self searching journey, and invites other to postulate on their own growth in an ever-changing landscape of dreams and passions. Designed to loop, "Infinity" metaphorically depicts Guo's state of mind as an intricate, peaceful, serene and magical forest.

Tamara Elkins and Tamryn Bennett

Tamara holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from COFA (now UNSW Art & Design), majoring in Printmaking, but has since expanded her practice as a draftsman and performance artist. For BEAMS, Tamara will collaborate in a dance performance to the soundtrack of Tamryn Bennett's poems, facilitating an experiment involving movement, poetry and the human body.

Winnie Leung

The wonderful Winnie Leung, along with Sydney Origami, returns to BEAMS with an origami making workshop, "Big, small and everything in between". Leung weaves different ways of thinking and responding into her workshops, and the end result of hundreds of origami creations in myriad sizes and shapes perfectly reflects this phenomena.
